School-Based Mental Health Services (31n)
The link between a student's mental health and their ability to learn and succeed academically is now widely recognized as a critical factor in their overall success. To truly reach their full potential, students need more than just academic instruction—they require a safe, supportive, and emotionally healthy environment that nurtures their well-being. When mental health support is prioritized, students are better equipped to navigate challenges and achieve success in every aspect of their lives.
What is 31N?
Michigan 31N services refer to a specific type of service designated as Section 31N of the Michigan Mental Health Code. The purpose of 31N funding is to expand and enhance mental health services for K-12 students with behavioral and mental health needs who aren't already receiving services through an IEP/IFSP. The funds should be used to expand existing services or establish new ones in schools with gaps in resources. Schools can also contract with external organizations to provide these services.
What is a 31N Provider?
A 31N provider is a licensed clinician who offers behavioral health services to students with mild to moderate mental health concerns. Through individual, group, and community counseling, they work with the school to help students improve their emotional well-being, manage behavior, and succeed academically. These services are designed for students who are not already receiving similar support through special education programs. The goal is to provide additional support to help students thrive both in school and in life.
Which GOISD schools have a 31N Provider?
All schools in the GOISD have 31N School-Based Mental Health Providers.
What makes a student eligible for 31N services? 31N services are designed for students with mild-to-moderate mental health or behavioral concerns. Eligibility is determined through assessments, including referrals, screenings, input from parents, teachers, and administrators, as well as mental health evaluations and school data like attendance, behavior, and grades.
These services are meant to supplement, not replace, Special Education School Social Work Services. In some cases, if a student is already receiving outside mental health services, 31N may offer consultative or case management support to align with school goals and improve communication between the school and outside providers.
How is student referred for 31N Services?
A student can be referred for 31N services by the student, their family, school staff, or even by expressing interest to a teacher or administrator. Once referred, a qualified mental health provider, will assess whether the student needs additional support for mental health or behavioral concerns. The goal is to determine if 31N services can help the student succeed and feel better both in school and at home.
